Emma Livingstone

CEO, UP-The Adult Cerebral Palsy Movement

Emma Livingstone qualified as a speech and language therapist from Birmingham University in 1998 and has worked primarily with children, managing services for both pre-school and school-age groups in London. She also supported student therapists at City University and practises as a life coach. Born with cerebral palsy, Emma has faced a decline in mobility in recent years, leading to multiple surgeries and stepping back from work. Her experiences highlighted a lack of awareness about cerebral palsy in adults, motivating her to advocate for better support. In 2018, Emma founded the charity Adult Cerebral Palsy Hub, now Up – The Adult Cerebral Palsy Movement, to champion the needs and rights of adults with cerebral palsy.

Professor K P Sivaraman Nair

Consultant neurologist, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Professor K P Sivaraman Nair is a consultant in neurology with a special interest in neurorehabilitation, working in Sheffield. He is currently an honorary professor of neurosciences at the University of Sheffield. He is also the chair of the Research and Clinical Standards Committee of the British Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine. Siva is a member of the RCP Joint Specialty Committee (JSC) on stroke and JSC on rehabilitation medicine. He is the chief editor of the textbook Neurorehabilitation: therapy and therapeutics, published by Cambridge University Press. Siva is the lead for the adult neurodisability clinic in Sheffield. He works with a neurophysiotherapy colleague to facilitate the transition of young adults with cerebral palsy into adult services. They conduct a clinic for adults with neurodisabilities and cerebral palsy. Siva’s research interest is to develop devices and interventions to promote function in people with neurological disabilities. Research projects include brain–computer interface, exoskeleton, multichannel electrical sensory stimulator for spasticity, and adults with cerebral palsy. His team is developing tools to monitor mobility of people with cerebral palsy using digital tools.

Dr Javvad Haider

Dr Javvad Haider is a consultant in rehabilitation medicine based at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and rehabilitation medicine lead for the National Rehabilitation Centre. He is also trustee and treasurer of the British Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine and chair of the BSPRM Long Term Neurological Conditions Special Interest Group. Javvad is also on the editorial board for the Advances in Rehabilitation Science and Practice Journal.

Dr Meenakshi Nayar

Dr Meena Nayar is a consultant in rehabilitation medicine and the clinical lead for the Specialist Neurological Rehabilitation Service (SNRS). This service includes chairing the Cross Neurological Rehabilitation Unit (CNRU) and the Specialist Neurological Rehabilitation Outreach Service (SNROS). Meena has an interest in the provision of specialist rehabilitation in both acute (eg ITU) and non-acute (eg nursing homes) settings and optimising service delivery across the pathway. She also has a keen interest in education and is the lead for web education at the British Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (BSPRM).

Professor Tom Solomon

Academic vice president, Royal College of Physicians

Professor Tom Solomon CBE is director of The Pandemic Institute, academic vice president of the Royal College of Physicians, vice president (international) of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences, and chair of neurological science at the University of Liverpool and Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust, where he is also consultant neurologist. Tom studied medicine at Oxford, investigates emerging pathogens, particularly those affecting the brain, and heads the multi-disciplinary Liverpool Brain Infections Group which works to reduce the global burden of neurological infections. He was at the forefront of the UK response to Ebola, Zika and COVID-19. Tom is an adviser to the UK government and WHO, appears regularly on BBC television and radio, and is a passionate science communicator, wining a Guinness World Record for his Sci-Art ‘World’s Biggest Brain’ project, and another for running the fastest marathon dressed as a doctor.

Dr Nick Murch

Consultant physician, Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust and president, Society for Acute Medicine

Dr Nick Murch is a consultant physician at the Royal Free Hospital in London, as well as honorary clinical associate professor at University College London (UCL). Privately, he also works as a consultant at the new Cleveland Clinic London. Nick studied medicine at the University of Wales College of Medicine before going on to train in acute and general medicine in the north London rotation. He moved to the Royal Free Hospital as a consultant in 2011 and has previously spent time as the clinical lead, as well as training programme director and regional specialty adviser for acute medicine. Currently, Nick is the trust lead for simulation training and has helped to rewrite the curriculum for training in acute medicine. He has a keen interest in managing acutely unwell medical patients including those with sepsis, pulmonary embolism, and toxicological problems, as well as the use of ultrasound. He sits on the editorial board of the Acute Medicine Journal and has over 20 published articles, as well as having authored a medical textbook and numerous book chapters.

Dr Barbara Lachana Onen

Dr Barbara Lachana Onen is an acute and general internal medicine consultant and medical same day emergency care (SDEC) lead at the Royal London Hospital. She has a keen interest in improvement of service delivery in same day emergency care. Barbara holds a masters in tropical medicine and international health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Her thesis focused on ambulatory care in low- and middle-income countries and won the Oxford Sir Richard Peto prize. She served as RCP chief registrar at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, carrying out quality improvement work in SDEC, and was part of the Oxford Emerging Leaders Programme and the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) Emerging Women Leaders Programme.

Dr Ragit Varia

Dr Ragit Varia is a consultant in acute medicine at Whiston Hospital, Mersey and West Lancashire NHS Trust. He is the trust lead for same day emergency care (SDEC), as well as medical lead for the Urgent Cancer Care Programme with the Cheshire and Merseyside Cancer Alliance, leading on their cancer SDEC and virtual ward. Ragit is also on the Society for Acute Medicine (SAM) Council, with whom he has developed and been course director for the 'Acute medics as improvers - improving SDEC' course. His is also a content lead for the RCP Medical Care – Driving Change Programme.

Dr Latif Rahman

Consultant, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust

Dr Latif Rahman is currently working as a consultant in acute medicine at University Hospitals of Leicester where he was previously working as an RCP chief registrar. Besides this, he is currently working as the POCUS teaching programme co-lead for acute internal medicine at the East Midlands Deanery and at Leicester Royal Infirmary. Latif is a FAMUS supervisor and FUSIC heart mentor. He has represented East Midlands at the RCP Trainee Committee and is also the current trainee representative at the Society for Acute Medicine Council. Latif is finishing his MSc in medical education from the University of Nottingham and also holds the FHEA accreditation, as well as a PG Cert degree in critical care. He is working voluntarily as the secretary for international affairs at the Acute and Critical Care Physicians' Foundation, Bangladesh with the purpose of improving the state of acute medicine and medical education in Bangladesh. He has authored a book called Acute Medicine in Ward for the doctors in Bangladesh, four editions of which have been published so far.

Dr Ankur Gupta-Wright

Consultant in infectious diseases, North Bristol NHS Trust

Dr Ankur Gupta-Wright is a postdoctoral clinician scientist in the Department of Infectious Diseases at Imperial College London, and an NHS consultant in infectious diseases at North Bristol NHS Trust. He has extensive clinical experience in TB, HIV, tropical medicine and general infectious diseases, including in the UK and in Southern Africa. Ankur’s research interests span the following areas, linked by a particular focus on developing and evaluating biomarkers, diagnostic tests and interventions to improve diagnosis, management and patient outcomes in infection: 1. Tuberculosis 2. Respiratory viral infections 3. Antimicrobial resistance 4. Pragmatic clinical trials in infection 5. Global health His work utilises a range of methodologies, including quantitative (epidemiology, modelling, systematic reviews and meta-analysis), clinical trials (early and late diagnostic accuracy studies, RCTs), and mixed qualitative methods (patient pathway analysis, implementation science). Ankur’s research has directly led to changes in national and international (WHO) guidelines and policy. He led large, multi-country clinical trials of diagnotic interventions (Gupta-Wright et al, Lancet 2018, Gupta-Wright et al, Lancet Global Health 2023). Ankur holds honorary positions at the University of Heidelberg (Germany) and University of Bristol, and collaborates widely across institutions such as LSHTM and UCSF. His global health research is mainly in countries of high-tuberculosis burden, including South Africa, Malawi, Georgia (drug resistant TB), Philippines, Zambia and Uganda. He has held research funding from NIHR, Wellcome, MRC and EU Horizon.

Dr Geraldine O’Hara

Dr Geraldine O’Hara has been employed as a consultant in infectious diseases and general medicine since 2019. She is the clinical lead for high consequence infections at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and led the trust response to mpox in 2022. She also works as a consultant in emerging infections and zoonoses at UKHSA. Geraldine is a contributing author to the British Infection Association eosinophilia guidelines and member of the ESCMID study group for clinical parasitology. She teaches on the diploma of tropical medicine and hygiene for both doctors and nurses.

Her clinical interests are in hepatology and medical leadership. Ricia is currently out of programme and seconded to the Care Quality Commission as part of the National Medical Directors Clinical Fellowship Scheme. She is the British Society of Gastroenterology Trainee section chair for 2024/2025 and has been a member of the RCP Trainee Committee since 2022.

Dr Kamal Patel

Consultant gastroenterologist, St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Dr Kamal Patel has been a consultant gastroenterologist at St George’s Hospital since September 2016. His clinical practice includes the assessment and management of a range of luminal gastroenterology conditions, including Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, microscopic colitis, coeliac disease, irritable bowel syndrome, dyspepsia, anaemia, unexplained weight loss and intestinal failure. Kamal graduated from Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Medical School in 2003, having undertaken an intercalated degree in Physiology in 2000. He undertook specialist training in gastroenterology and hepatology in the south-east London deanery, and an advanced inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)/endoscopy fellowship at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, prior to taking up a consultant post at St George’s Hospital in 2016. He has also completed a diploma in medical education in 2016. Kamal is involved in all aspects of gastroenterological care, running weekly gastroenterology clinics at St George's and Nelson Health Centre, along with specialist inflammatory bowel disease clinics. He carries out regular upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy lists, with a special interest in more complex endoscopic procedures relating to IBD strictures, IBD dysplasia and intestinal failure. He has been the Co-IBD lead since 2017 and continues to maintain a major research interest in IBD. Kamal’s work has been presented at the American Gastroenterology Association, United European Gastroenterology Association and the British Society of Gastroenterology. He is involved with the clinical research facility at St George’s, and is currently principal investigator and chief investigator for numerous NHS adopted IBD clinical trials.

Dr Andrew Rochford

Dr Andrew Rochford is a consultant gastroenterologist at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. He has a strong background in clinical leadership, patient safety, quality improvement and education and training. He is currently chair of the Patient Safety Committee and Medicines Safety Joint Working Group and provides clinical leadership to the Patient and Carer Network, accreditation services and national audit programmes hosted by the RCP, as well as the Chief Registrar Programme.

Dr Duncan Street

Dr Duncan Street was elected to represent the West Midlands on the Royal College of Physicians Trainee’s Committee in 2022, having worked in the region since 2017. He is a neurology registrar and took time out of full-time clinical training to complete a PhD in clinical neurosciences at the University of Cambridge. Duncan’s PhD focused on clinical, cognitive and neuroimaging biomarkers of progressive supranuclear palsy and related disorders, drawn from national multicentre cohorts. His patient-centred research was complemented by experience in cognitive disorders clinics, movement disorders clinics, general neurology and clinical trials assessments. Duncan has a strong interest in improving trainee involvement in research and is a member of the NIHR Clinical Research Network Neurodegeneration National Specialty Group, the European Academy of Neurology Scientific Panel on ALS and frontotemporal dementia, and the Association of British Neurologists Cognitive Disorders Advisory Group.

Dr Ruford Sequeira

Specialist doctor, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board

Dr Ruford Sequeira is a specialist in Parkinson's disease and related movement disorders at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board in South Wales. With a career spanning over 14 years in the movement disorders specialisation, he has led some innovative ideas in managing the complexities of patients with Parkinson's disease (PwP). Ruford has also led research in fragility fractures in PwP which was presented at the International Movement Disorders Congress in Berlin in 2016. He is passionate about gait disorders and its effect on falls, and is currently working on inpatients falls prevention with an emphasis on detection and treatment of osteoporosis in older adults.

Professor Adrian Parry Jones

His research and clinical work are focused on improving outcomes after intracerebral haemorrhage, a devastating form of stroke with poor outcomes and few treatments.

Dr Matthew Jones

Consultant neurologist, Northern Care Alliance

Dr Matt Jones is a consultant neurologist at the Manchester Centre for Clinical Neurosciences. He is an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Manchester. His clinical interests are general and acute neurology with subspecialisation in cognitive neurology; he runs a tertiary clinic for early onset and atypical dementia, taking referrals from throughout the north-west of the UK and beyond.

Dr Anna Cohen

Consultant neurologist, Luton and Dunstable University Hospital"

Dr Anna Cohen qualified from Oxford University and obtained her PhD from UCL under the supervision of Professor Peter Goadsby at the Institute of Neurology Queen Square. She is a consultant neurologist at Luton and Dunstable Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital London. Anna leads the Bedfordshire Headache Service, developing an integrated headache pathway for primary and secondary care. Her research interests include the TACs and SUNCT/SUNA, and she has authored numerous original research papers, as well as many review papers, peer reviews, book chapters and online learning resources. Anna teaches at all levels from pre-medical school, medical students, and postgraduate both nationally and internationally. She is a founder member of the ABN Environmental Sustainability SIG, and firmly believes that caring for the planet is paramount in order to be able to care for our patients in the future.

Professor Jonathan Bennett

Consultant respiratory physician, Glenfield Hospital UHL NHS Trust

Professor Jonathan Bennett is recent past president of the British Thoracic Society (BTS) (2023–24) and previous chair of the BTS (2018–21). He is a consultant respiratory and general medicine physician at Glenfield Hospital and an honorary professor of respiratory medicine in the University of Leicester Medical School, as well as deputy medical director of invited reviews at the RCP (2019–24). From a non-medical background, Jon trained as a medical student and junior doctor in Leeds. He undertook his research in Nottingham and completed registrar training in the East Midlands and Auckland, New Zealand. Jon was a consultant in Derby prior to moving to Leicester and has had many roles during his career, including in clinical leadership, education and training.

Dr Catherine Rowan

Respiratory registrar, Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust

Dr Catherine Rowan is a registrar in respiratory medicine based in Yorkshire. She graduated from Bristol medical school in 2012 with honours and a first-class BSc in physiology. Since graduating, Catherine has worked in West Yorkshire and spent a year working as a medical registrar in Christchurch, New Zealand. She currently works in Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield. In 2022, Catherine joined the RCP Trainees Committee as a Yorkshire representative. She was elected as deputy chair in 2023 and has recently been made co-chair of the RCP Resident Doctor Committee.

Dr Michael Davies

Dr Michael Davies is a consultant respiratory physician at the Respiratory Support and Sleep Centre, Royal Papworth Hospital. He specialises in the management of respiratory failure, including weaning from prolonged mechanical ventilation. Michael is the lead clinician for the British Thoracic Society's National Respiratory Support Audit Programme.

Dr Michelle Ramsay

Consultant respiratory physician, Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust

Dr Michelle Ramsay graduated from Kings College London in 2004 and continued her medical training in south-west London, Surrey and Sussex. She spent 4 years completing a PhD at the Lane Fox Unit, St Thomas’ Hospital working with the London respiratory muscle group on respiratory muscle physiology and non-invasive ventilation. Michelle has worked as a consultant at the Lane Fox Unit since 2016. The focus of her research is on patient ventilator interaction and non-invasive ventilation. She has presented her work at both national and international conferences, being awarded both the ERS non-invasive ventilation grant and the British Lung Foundation travel award in 2013. Michelle’s clinical interest is in ventilatory failure, non-invasive ventilation, ventilation during sleep and neuromuscular disease. She is the clinical lead for acute non-invasive ventilation at GSTT and the lead for the ventilatory Motor Neurone Disease Service.

Dr Mark Juniper

Consultant physician, Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Dr Mark Juniper has been a consultant physician in Swindon since 2000 and has held various management roles within Great Western Hospital. He is currently medical director at Health Innovation West of England and lead clinical co-ordinator at the National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death (NCEPOD), where he has led reviews of acute NIV and pneumonia. Mark is also chair of the Quality Improvement Committee for the British Thoracic Society (BTS). The BTS has started a process to learn from patient safety incidents, which will be the focus of his presentation.

Dr Mary Sommerlad

Consultant dermatologist, Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

Dr Mary Sommerlad is a consultant dermatologist specialising in paediatric dermatology, skin of colour dermatology, inflammatory dermatoses, photoaging, and laser dermatology. She studied medicine at UCL, where she obtained a first class intercalated BSc in immunology and was awarded the British Society of Immunology undergraduate prize. Mary undertook her dermatology training in London at the Royal London and Royal Free Hospital, affording her a wealth of experience in managing dermatology in all skin types. She has been awarded a number of prizes, including the Hugh Wallace junior registrar prize and the Royal Society of Medicine monthly registrar prize in 2013 and 2014. Mary’s interests include facial inflammatory dermatoses such as eczema, rosacea and acne; pigmentary disorders such as melasma and skin rejuvenation. She is passionate in promoting healthy skin at every age in every skin colour through teaching and has she has spoken at academic meetings including at the British Association of Dermatologists annual meeting, primary care Dermatology Society and the skin of colour workshop. Due to her enthusiasm in promoting healthy skin for all, she is an ambassador for the British Skin Foundation, and she has also contributed to a number of features in highly respected publications such as Vogue, Elle, The Black Skin Directory and The Sunday Times. Mary has clinical research interests in medical dermatology and contributes to the UK Dermatology Clinical Trials Network, as well as working as a reviewer for academic journals. Her work has been published in scientific peer reviewed journals such as the British Journal of Dermatology and she is frequently invited to speak at academic meetings.

Dr Christopher Bower

Consultant dermatologist, Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

Dr Christopher Bower has been a consultant in Exeter since 2001. His key clinical interests lie in skin cancer, including Mohs micrographic surgery. Christopher’s national roles include ex-clinical vice president for the British Association of Dermatologists, membership of the Dermatology Specialist Advisory Committee, UK lead for dermatology specialty trainee recruitment, and membership of the British Society of Dermatological Surgery Executive Committee. Medical education is a key interest, and Christopher is co-organiser of the annual dermatology specialty certificate examination revision course, having previously co-organised the annual UK dermatology clinical assistants meeting for 8 years. He has given over 200 regional, national, and international lectures, and has been made an honorary lifetime member of the Primary Care Dermatology Society. Christopher is also a facilitator for training in advanced communication for medical practitioners at the University of Exeter Medical School.

Dr Beibei Du-Harpur

NIHR academic clinical lecturer in dermatology, King's College London

Dr Beibei Du-Harpur is an NIHR academic clinical lecturer in dermatology at St John's Institute of Dermatology, King's College London. She completed her PhD in molecular medicine on the Francis Crick Institute Doctoral Clinical Fellow Scheme, working between a skin biology lab at the Centre for Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine, King's College London, and a computational biology laboratory at the Crick. Beibei currently researches inflammation and the skin, with a focus on the skin conditions acne vulgaris and hidradenitis suppurativa.

Dr Mitesh Patel

Dermatology registrar, Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust

Dr Mitesh Patel is a dermatology registrar at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital and the current British Association of Dermatology national trainee representative. During his training, Mitesh completed a PhD looking at the diagnosis of cellulitis. He has 25 publications and attained 30 grants/prizes during his undergraduate and postgraduate training. Mitesh is also a qualified GP and has completed a postgraduate certificate in medical education. He is a trustee and membership secretary for the hereditary spastic paraplegia UK support group.

Consultant in stroke medicine, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust

Dr Kailash Krishnan is triple accredited, with expertise in general medicine, geriatrics and stroke medicine. He is a stroke consultant at Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, as well as clinical lead for mechanical thrombectomy and patent foramen closure in cryptogenic stroke, which is also a regional service. Kailash is the National Optimal Stroke Imaging Pathway (NOSIP) lead for the East Midlands. He is an invited member of the Royal College of Physicians Joint Stroke Medicine Committee and group chair of the intercollegiate working party which developed the National Clinical Guideline for Stroke, 2023. Kailash is the auditor for the European Stroke Organisation and an invited member of the Guideline Writing Committee for guidelines on blood pressure management in acute stroke. Hi time in the committee included work on the management of stroke in women during pregnancy and the post-partum period. Kailash is a recipient of a National Institute for Health and Care Research UK award and is the chief investigator of a multicentre trial testing mannitol for cerebral oedema after acute intracerebral haemorrhage. He also received another research award as chief investigator to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms of how treatment could affect the blood-brain barrier and cerebral oedema after acute intracerebral haemorrhage. Kailash’s other interests include developing simple clinical tools such as HINTS, as well as applying cost-effective imaging tools in acute stroke. This includes measuring intracranial compartments and published results to show that these affect prognosis. His work is published widely in world-leading medical journals including the Lancet and he is regularly invited to write expert medical reviews on acute stroke and complications, treatment and secondary prevention.

Dr Soma Banerjee

Professor of practice (stroke medicine), Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust

Dr Soma Banerjee is a consultant physician and professor of practice in stroke medicine at Imperial College London and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, where she is also clinical director for stroke and neurosciences. Her clinical practice involves hyperacute treatment of stroke through to early rehabilitation. Soma obtained her MD research degree in 2013 and her research involved a first-in-human clinical trial of intra-arterial stem cell therapy for the treatment of acute stroke. She is currently the joint chair of the Imperial Thrombectomy Board, responsible for the implementation of thrombectomy services at her trust. Soma is also the London thrombectomy lead in the London Integrated Stroke Delivery Network (ISDN), which has actively developed collaborations across London to allow full implementation of 24/7 services. At a national level, she sits on the executive team for the British and Irish Association of Stroke Physicians (BIASP), in the role of equality, diversity and inclusion lead.

Professor Amitava Banerjee

Professor Amitava Banerjee is a professor in clinical data science at University College London, and honorary consultant cardiologist at University College London Hospitals and Barts Health NHS Trust. He is a researcher, educator and clinician with interests spanning data science, cardiovascular disease, global health, training and evidence-based healthcare, and more recently the risk associated with underlying chronic diseases and long COVID during the COVID-19 pandemic. He is also national specialty lead for cardiovascular at the NIHR Research Development Network. After qualifying from Oxford Medical School, Amitava trained as a junior doctor in Oxford, Newcastle, Hull and London. His interest in preventive cardiology and evidence-based medicine led to a master’s in public health at Harvard (2004–5), an internship at the World Health Organisation (2005) and DPhil in epidemiology from Oxford (2010). He was clinical lecturer in cardiovascular medicine at the University of Birmingham, before moving to UCL in 2015. Amitava works across two busy tertiary care settings with both inpatient and outpatient commitments. Although he is subspecialised in heart failure, he has ongoing practice in acute general cardiology and a keen interest in the diagnosis and management of atrial fibrillation. His clinical work very much informs his research and vice versa, whether in the evaluation of medical technology, study of cardiovascular disease in under-served populations, disease phenotypes in electronic health records, or COVID-19.

Dr Niall Elliott

Dr Niall Elliott is a sports and exercise medicine physician based in Dundee, Scotland. He is the head of sports medicine for the sportscotland Institute of Sport and chief medical officer for the British Olympic Association. Niall has worked in sport, exercise medicine and musculoskeletal medicine for 25 years – as a team doctor, a MSK clinician in the NHS, and as part of a senior clinical team involved in developing concussion in sport guidelines. Dr Mumtaz Patel

Professor Sanjay Agrawal

Consultant in respiratory and intensive care medicine, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust

Professor Sanjay Agrawal is the RCP’s special adviser on tobacco and chairs the RCP Tobacco Advisory Group. This group has published several reports and recommendations on the treatment of tobacco dependency and tobacco control over several decades. Many of the recommendations from these reports have gone on to become adopted within national health policy, most notably setting up tobacco dependency treatment services for all in-patients and maternity services in England. The most recent report focused on the role of e-cigarettes.

Jacqui Pollington

A registered nurse, independent prescriber with an MSc in advanced nursing, she has led service development in the fields of asthma, COPD, pulmonary rehabilitation, home oxygen therapy, virtual wards, and bronchiectasis. Jacqui has co-authored several British Thoracic Society clinical statements and is the chair of the BTS Specialist Advisory Group on tobacco dependency. She was clinical lead for South Yorkshire's QUIT Programme.

Dr Louise Restrick

Integrated consultant respiratory physician, Whittington Health NHS Trust

Dr Louise Restrick is an integrated consultant respiratory physician at the Whittington Hospital, London. She co-leads an award-winning multi-disciplinary COPD team with a long-standing commitment to delivering evidence-based treatment for tobacco dependence as a key component of high-value respiratory care. Louise co-led the 2010–16 London Respiratory Team that developed the ‘COPD Value Pyramid’ and the London Clinical Senate ‘Helping Smokers Quit Programme’, was a member of the 2019 NICE COPD Guidelines Group that named ‘smoking cessation’ as a ‘Fundamental of COPD care’, and is a co-author of the 2024 British Thoracic Society clinical statement on the ‘Medical management of inpatients with tobacco dependency’.

Arran Woodhouse

Lead tobacco dependence specialist, Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Arran Woodhouse has been working in the field of tobacco dependence for over 20 years, working in both acute and community settings. He is the clinical lead for tobacco dependence at King’s College Hospital and was responsible for implementing a version of the Ottawa Model for Smoking Cessation at an NHS England early implementer site. Arran has a background in health psychology and worked with NICE on the latest Tobacco guideline (NG209) as a topic expert, and the Tobacco: treating dependence quality standard (QS207) as a Specialist Committee member. He is a past member of the British Thoracic Society’s Tobacco Specialist Advisory Group and recently worked as a co-author for the National Centre for Smoking Cessation Training (NCSCT) on the NHS standard treatment plan for inpatient tobacco dependence and associated training package.

Professor Matthew Evison

Consultant in respiratory medicine, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust

Professor Matthew Evison qualified from Manchester University Medical School in 2004. He undertook specialist training in respiratory medicine 2008–2014, including a 2-year fellowship in thoracic oncology at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, completing an MD degree in lung cancer diagnostics. Matthew was appointed as a consultant in respiratory medicine (thoracic oncology) at Wythenshawe Hospital in 2014 and was the clinical director for lung cancer for Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance from 2017–2023, until being appointed as associate medical director in 2023. Mathew is currently the clinical lead for the Greater Manchester Regional Tobacco Control Programme ‘making smoking history’, a member of the British Thoracic Society Lung Cancer & Mesothelioma Specialist Advisory Group (SAG), and a member of the British Thoracic Oncology Group Steering Committee. Additionally, he is honorary clinical chair for Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MASHC).

Dr Shivani Misra

Consultant physician, Imperial College London

Dr Shivani Misra is a senior clinical lecturer in diabetes at Imperial College London and an honorary consultant in metabolic medicine at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. Shivani leads the DKA theme in the National Diabetes Inpatient Safety Audit (NDISA) and in 2024 she co-authored the new international consensus guidelines for adult hyperglycaemic crises. Shivani chairs the National Diabetes Audit Group for young type 2 diabetes and is clinical adviser to the T2DAY (type 2 diabetes in the young) NHS Diabetes Programme. As a clinician scientist, she leads a portfolio of studies investigating early-onset type 2 diabetes, and in 2022, she was awarded a Wellcome Trust clinical career development fellowship to study the genetics and epidemiology of early-onset type 2 diabetes in different ethnic groups.

Professor Ketan Dhatariya

Consultant in diabetes and endocrinology and honorary professor of medicine, Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Professor Ketan Dhatariya graduated from the University of London in 1991 and did his diabetes and endocrinology training in and around London. He was also a part-time GP and took some time out of his training to spend a year doing intensive care medicine and anaesthetics. After he finished his training in 2001, he went to do a research fellowship in endocrinology at the Mayo Clinic. He was appointed as a consultant in diabetes, endocrinology and general medicine at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital in 2004, and as honorary professor of medicine at the University of East Anglia in 2019. Ketan has several national roles. He is the chair of the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists, and was also the chair of the Joint British Diabetes Societies Inpatient Care Group. He is the chair of the Examining Board for the UK Specialist Clinical Exam in Diabetes and Endocrinology. He is the section co-editor for diabetes for www.endotext.org. He is an associate editor of Diabetic Medicine. Ketan has over 190 peer-reviewed publications, and has published over 20 book chapters on inpatient diabetes, perioperative diabetes care or on the diabetic foot.

Dr Helen Simpson

Consultant endocrinologist, University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Dr Helen Simpson is a consultant endocrinologist who has worked at UCLH since 2017 and at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge for 12 years prior to that. She has extensive clinical experience within endocrinology, in outpatient and inpatient settings, including seeing referrals in ED, acute medicine and surgery, oncology, neurosurgery and ICU. Helen is clinical lead for endocrinology and outpatient transformation at UCLH, with a focus on patient safety and the aim to make outpatient services fit for the new world. She is an active member of the Society for Endocrinology (SfE), recently being elected to Council, and was delighted to receive the 2021 award for outstanding clinical practitioner. Helen is also member of the RCP Patient Safety Committee, working with the RCP, SfE and NHSE&I to improve care for all patients with adrenal insufficiency, including the NHS emergency steroid card. She is also topic adviser for the NICE guideline – the focus of the session at Medicine+. She works closely with patients support groups, and leads Twitter chats on adrenal insufficiency and other endocrinology issues.

Dr Narendra Reddy

Consultant endocrinologist, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust

Dr Narendra Reddy is a consultant endocrinologist, head of service and an honorary senior lecturer in University Hospitals of Leicester. He completed endocrinology specialist training in Oxford and obtained an MD research degree from the University of Warwick for the topic of 'Endocrine determinants of brown fat' research. Narendra’s areas of interest are adrenal, pituitary and electrolyte disorders of sodium and calcium. He has authored multiple publications in leading journals and is a co-author of the national guideline for pituitary apoplexy management. Narendra has written book chapters and is currently an editor of the endocrinology chapter of Kumar and Clarke’s Clinical Medicine. He is currently East Midlands lead for the Clinical Research Network (NIHR) of Metabolism and Endocrinology portfolio, and is involved in the management and conduction of clinical research studies. Narendra is also a member of the Society for Endocrinology Clinical Committee and is on the advisory panel for Parathyroid UK.

Dr Rebecca Sagar

Dr Rupert Major

Clinical associate professor and honorary consultant nephrologist, University of Leicester and University Hospital of Leicester NHS Trust

Dr Rupert Major is a clinical associate professor in the Population Health Sciences Department at the University of Leicester and an honorary consultant nephrologist at University Hospitals of Leicester. He completed a Kidney Research UK funded PhD in relation to cardiovascular risk prediction in chronic kidney disease in 2019, and became a consultant in 2021. Rupert led the research work that saw the Kidney Failure Risk Equation (KFRE) recommended for use in the 2021 NICE Chronic Kidney Disease guidelines. Since then, he has focused on KFRE’s implementation into routine clinical care and integrated care for chronic kidney disease and other long term conditions. Rupert leads the UKKA’s KFRE Implementation Group, working with primary and secondary care clinicians, biochemists and patient representatives to support the use of KFRE. He has pioneered the LUCID Programme in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland which aims to improve population health for people living with CKD and other long term conditions by using virtual clinics and data driven approaches to deliver more efficient care.

Fiona Loud

Policy director, Kidney Care UK

Fiona Loud is policy director of Kidney Care UK, the leading kidney patient support charity providing advice, support and financial assistance to thousands of people every year. She led the charity’s work on COVID-19, the organ donation opt-out law, and continuation of dialysis provision in the EU post-Brexit. Fiona is involved with numerous other groups, working to improve standards of care for kidney patients. She set up and chaired the UK Renal Registry Patient Council and has contributed as a lay representative to many of the kidney guidelines produced by NICE, including those on CKD. She is also chair of the Organ Donation Committee at West Herts Hospital. Fiona spent 5 years on dialysis after her kidneys failed, because of rare disease tuberous sclerosis and kidney cancer, before receiving a transplant from her husband in late 2006. She was voted a HSJ top 50 patient leader and recently become an honorary member of the UK Kidney Association in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the UK kidney community.

Dr Kristin Veighey

NIHR academic clinical fellow in general practice, University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust

Dr Kristin Veighey graduated from Queen’s University Belfast in 2004, prior to moving to Southampton. After a 4-year period as a junior doctor in Wessex, she started renal specialty training in London (North Thames) and completed a PhD. During her research time she supported a multinational clinical trial (REPAIR), and developed a passion for clinical research to improve patient care. She transferred to Portsmouth, where she completed her training, and then worked as a consultant nephrologist for 5 years before making the decision to retrain as a clinical academic GP. Kristin is currently leading on National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR)-funded research to understand how we can better identify and manage people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in primary care. She sits on the UK Kidney Association CKD Special Interest Group (SIG), leads the Society for Academic Primary Care SIG and works closely with the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care System and industry partners to support improvement projects for people living with CKD. She has established a PCN kidney clinic, led by a GP with an extended role (GPwER) in renal medicine, a role that they are working towards being formally recognised by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP). In addition to this, Kristin works part time at University Hospital Southampton (UHS) as a co-associate director of the Southampton Academy of Research. In this role she leads the UHS Research Leaders’ Programme.

Dr Yusuf Jinadu

Dr Yusuf Olanrewaju Jinadu completed his undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in Nigeria. Professor Sabina Dizdarevic

Professor Sabina Dizdarevic is consultant physician in nuclear medicine, PET-CT clinical lead, and divisional research and innovation director at the University Hospitals Sussex. She has obtained MD from the University of Sarajevo, MSc in nuclear medicine from University College London and her PhD degree from the University of Sussex and Brighton. Sabina was responsible for introducing several state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging and therapeutic targeted radionuclide services regionally, nationally and internationally. She is the president elect and research chair of the British Nuclear Medicine Society (BNMS). Sabina’s research interest is in novel clinical investigations using radionuclides, including radiothera(g)nostic strategies in oncology, particularly in prostate and thyroid cancers, and development and translation of molecular imaging biomarkers and multimodality functional molecular imaging in oncology and non-cancer imaging.

Dr Vineet Pant

Specialist in nuclear medicine, Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Dr Vineet Pant is a highly accomplished nuclear medicine specialist with extensive experience across India, Germany and the UK. After earning an MBBS from LLRM Medical College in 2004 in India, Vineet completed a DNB in nuclear medicine in 2009 and received a European fellowship in 2014. His expertise includes advanced therapies like PRRT and PRLT, honed during a Theranostics fellowship in Germany. Currently serving at Royal Liverpool University Hospital, he has held various roles including clinical fellow and speciality doctor prior to being a specialist. Vineet’s work in Lu PSMA therapy, research contributions, and leadership in organising conferences underscore his commitment to the field. Elected as secretary general of ANMPI (2019–21), he has significantly contributed to nuclear medicine education and research. He has been recognised with multiple awards, the latest being the Saul Hertz Radiotherapy Poster Prize at the BNMS Spring Meeting 2024 for 'Real world experience of patients referred for Lu-PSMA treatment in a UK teaching hospital', and continues to influence the field globally through his clinical work, research, and teaching.

Professor Sobhan Vinjamuri

Lead consultant in nuclear medicine, Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Professor Sobhan Vinjamuri is a lead consultant in nuclear medicine at Royal Liverpool University Hospital. He is also an honorary professor at the School of Health Sciences at Salford University and the Institute of Translational Medicine at the University of Liverpool. Sobhan was the head of Mersey neuroendocrine tumour service between 2009–2015 which is an accredited centre of excellence. He is also an editor with a rotating editor-in-chief role in nuclear medicine communications. Between 2009– 2020, he was the chairman of north-west research ethics committees, initially in Liverpool and later GM South, and chairman of the Joint Specialty Committee on Nuclear Medicine of RCP London from 2020. Sobhan was president of the British Nuclear Medicine Society between 2016–2018 and a UK delegate to the European Association of Nuclear Medicine. He has also been a member of fitness to practice panels of the GMC, the Specialty Advisory Committee at the RCP, and the Administration of Radioactive Substances Advisory Committee.

Dr Louise Savic

Dr Louise Savic is a consultant anaesthetist with a clinical and research interest in drug allergy and perioperative anaphylaxis. She is currently a doctoral fellow with the NIHR, undertaking mixed-methods research to explore the problems of drug allergy in surgical patients. Louise’s areas of interest include the development of novel diagnostic pathways in drug allergy, the delabelling of penicillin allergy, and the psychological impact of perioperative anaphylaxis. She recently led the development of a national guideline for penicillin allergy delabelling by non-allergists and is developing a complex intervention for routine delabelling in surgical patients. Working closely with the British Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, and Clinical Immunology Professional Network, Louise is leading a cross-speciality working party for improving allergy care among surgical patients.

Dr Andrew Whyte

Consultant allergist and immunologist, Derriford Hospital, University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust

Dr Andrew Whyte is a consultant in allergy and immunology in Plymouth, where he has worked since 2014. With the rest of the team at Derriford Hospital, he manages patients across the south west peninsula with immunodeficiencies and allergic diseases, and contributes to the diagnostic immunology laboratory. Andrew has particular clinical interests in venom allergy, idiopathic anaphylaxis, and mastocytosis, and leads University Hospitals Plymouth as a European Centre of Excellence with the European Competence Network on Mastocytosis. He contributed to the 2021 Resuscitation Council UK Anaphylaxis Guidelines and chaired the allergy in the military working group of the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

Dr Gareth Payne

Dr Gareth Payne is a consultant clinical neurophysiologist working in Bangor, north Wales. Dr Gareth Payne

Dr Jeremy D P Bland

Consultant in clinical neurophysiology, East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust

Dr Jeremy Bland qualified from Manchester University in 1981 and trained in clinical neurophysiology in the West Midlands before taking up a post as consultant in clinical neurophysiology at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital and the Regional Neuroscience Centre in London in1989. Since 1992, he has developed an interest in all aspects of the epidemiology, aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), compiling a database of over 50,000 patients suspected to have the disorder and publishing original papers and review articles on the topic. He is also one of the authors of the current Cochrane review of steroid treatment for CTS. Since 2006, he has run a clinic dedicated to treating patients with CTS as part of a cooperative, multidisciplinary care pathway spanning primary and secondary care. The clinic carries out one-stop assessment (clinical consultation, nerve conduction studies and ultrasound imaging) and treatment (splinting and local steroid injection) and arranges surgery for those patients for whom it is appropriate, either in primary care or the hospital service. He has also developed an interest in high-resolution ultrasound imaging of peripheral nerve disease. Current research projects in the field of CTS include studies of the long-term outcome of serial steroid injection and the role of amyloidosis in causation of CTS in older patients. He maintains a website devoted to carpal tunnel syndrome at www.carpal-tunnel.net. This not only acts as a patient information resource, but also provides a validated diagnostic questionnaire that can provide a quantitative estimate of the probability of CTS in an individual patient with hand symptoms. He also has a wider interest in other entrapment neuropathies and their assessment using neurophysiological and ultrasound techniques. He has lectured extensively on these topics, most recently at meetings of the BSCN, BPNS, ISPNI and AANEM, and received the AANEM ‘distinguished researcher’ award in 2021. He is currently the national specialty adviser to NHS England for clinical neurophysiology.

Dr Shruthi Konda

Consultant respiratory physician, Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust

Dr Shruthi Konda graduated from Imperial College and trained in London in respiratory and general internal medicine. She was appointed as a consultant respiratory physician in 2017. Her base is the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, which is a National Centre of Excellence for patients with lung disease in the UK. Shruthi’s clinical exposure covers the breadth of respiratory medicine, but she has particular expertise in the diagnosis and management of sleep disorders and respiratory failure. Shruthi is the Linacre fellow for the RCP, which is a national role supporting RCP college tutors and associate college tutors across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. She is also an MRCP PACES examiner and her ever-growing educational portfolio includes acting as an external reviewer for two cohorts of MTI trainees in Kerala, India. Shruthi is also educational lead for the British Sleep Society and organises, speaks and chairs at national and international courses and conferences. She has also been elected to represent sleep research and education at a European level by her peers.

Professor Joerg Steier

Professor of respiratory and sleep medicine, Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust

Professor Joerg Steier's training in medicine commenced at the University of Leipzig in Saxony. Following graduation, he worked on his MD thesis entitled ‘Transthoracic echocardiography in pulmonary hypertension’ and gathered work experience in Zurich, at the University of Alabama in Birmingham (US), and in Bavaria. Joerg’s respiratory training led him to the Western German Lung Centre at the University of Essen, and his interest in respiratory physiology and sleep-disordered breathing led him to London on a long-term research fellowship of the European Respiratory Society (ERS). His studies concluded in the PhD thesis on ‘Sleep-disordered breathing and the respiratory muscles’ at King’s College London. Joerg’s projects with the London Respiratory Physiology Group resulted in research publications with involvement in an impact case, the development of new intellectual property (ce-marked product), and the founding of a new company. His work in the field of respiratory and sleep physiology has evolved into collaborations across the world. Joerg currently works as consultant at Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in the Lane Fox Unit, a tertiary service for weaning and non-invasive ventilation. He is also placed at the British Sleep Society (BSS) accredited Sleep Disorders Centre at King’s Health Partners. Joerg was awarded the chair for respiratory and sleep medicine at King’s College London and has been a member of the executive committee of the British Sleep Society (BSS) since 2017 as president 2019–2023 and now past president.

Professor Malcolm von Schantz

Professor of chronobiology, Northumbria University

Malcolm von Schantz is professor of chronobiology, and deputy faculty pro vice-chancellor of research and knowledge exchange at the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at Northumbria University. He studied in his native country, Sweden, and in the United States before continuing his career in the UK, where he has previously worked at Imperial College London and the University of Surrey. Malcolm has held or is holding visiting professorships at the Universities of São Paulo (Brazil) and the Witwatersrand (South Africa). He studies circadian rhythms and sleep as a global health issue, applying a wide range of methods from molecular to behavioural measures. His research is currently funded by the Wellcome Trust and the MRC.

Dr Zoe Schaedel

General practitioner, Brighton and Hove Federation

Dr Zoe Schaedel has 17 years’ experience as an NHS GP, with additional expertise in both sleep medicine and women’s health. She has taught on the International Sleep Medicine Course and sits on the British Sleep Society Education Committee. Zoe is a British Menopause Society (BMS) menopause specialist and is the co-director of Myla Health, a private women’s health clinic, as well as being the co-founder of The Good Sleep Clinic which delivers personalised treatment programmes for insomnia. She also leads the Brighton and Hove Community NHS Menopause Clinic. Zoe has published articles on the topics of menopause and sleep in The Lancet and Post Reproductive Health and has featured in publications including The Guardian, The Daily Express, Grazia, Stylist and Good Housekeeping.

Dr Paula Briggs

Consultant in sexual and reproductive health, Liverpool Women's NHS Foundation Trust

Dr Paula Briggs is a consultant in sexual and reproductive health based at Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust. She is immediate past chair of the British Menopause Society. Paula qualified from University of Glasgow in 1987 and trained as a GP before moving to Liverpool in 1993. She then worked in general practice and sexual health until 2012. Paula is now devoted to the delivery of women’s health care, research and education. Her main interest is menopause management, with a particular interest in urogenital atrophy. She has co-edited three books, (one second edition), co-written an undergraduate textbook in obstetrics and gynaecology, a revision guide for MFSRH, and a book specifically for men about female hormones. Paula has also written a patient booklet on menopause (second edition), co-authored a myth busting book on contraception for the lay public, and is working on a similar menopause patient book with colleagues currently. She also has two new patient booklets, one co-authored on sexual and reproductive health after gynaecological cancer and the other on urogenital atrophy.

Haitham Hamoda

Consultant gynaecologist, subspecialist in reproductive medicine and surgery lead menopause service, King’s College hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Mr Haitham Hamoda is a consultant gynaecologist and subspecialist in reproductive medicine and surgery, and the lead for the menopause service at King’s College Hospital. He is trustee and past chair of the British Menopause Society. Haitham has published widely in his specialised field and is actively involved in ongoing research projects both locally and nationally. He is first author of ‘The British Menopause Society and women’s health concern 2020 recommendations on hormone replacement therapy in menopausal women’, and author of ‘The British Menopause Society guideline on the management of women with premature ovarian insufficiency 2017’. Haitham is also a fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and was awarded a degree of doctor of medicine (MD) from the University of Aberdeen. He obtained his accreditation as a subspecialist in reproductive medicine at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital.

Dr Dan Furmedge

Dr Dan Furmedge is a consultant physician in geriatric and internal medicine at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. He is also training programme director for internal medicine stage 1, honorary senior clinical lecturer, and censor for RCP London. Dan’s main interests within geriatric medicine are pragmatic individualised care and shared decision making. He is concerned about the rapid loss of generalist skills and the concept of 'too much medicine', particularly for frail older adults. He is an advocate for physicians to be more confident in managing conditions more broadly without needing to call a specialist for everything. Dan is also keen on promoting better treatment escalation, advance care planning and reducing polypharmacy.

Dr Elena Mucci

Dr Elena Mucci trained as a geriatrician at King’s College Hospital, London and was a visiting geriatrician at Yale University Hospitals, USA. She was appointed as a consultant geriatrician in 2011 and has been based at Conquest Hospital since. Elena is passionate about delivering personalised care to her patients and her areas of interest are frailty, polypharmacy and anticipatory care planning. Elena is also an honorary senior clinical lecturer at Brighton and Sussex Medical School and is very passionate about education and training. She is a national and international speaker and her talks have been praised as most engaging and practical sessions with tools for everyday use.

Dr Alexandra Burgess

ST7, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board

Dr Alexandra Jayne Burgess is a registrar in geriatric medicine in south Wales, currently out of programme as a senior clinical research fellow looking at interventions in acute frailty. After studying a degree in psychology with professional placement in Cardiff University, Alexandra completed graduate entry medicine at Swansea University. She then completed her postgraduate training, including starting specialty training in geriatric medicine, in south Wales. Alexandra is passionate about improving the care of older adults and is actively involved in service improvement delivery, teaching and management. She is currently studying for an MD at Swansea University, investigating improving the interface between community and acute care, focusing on service delivery and pre-hospital medicine in older, frailer adults. Alexandra has developed multiple teaching programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate trainees and is an active trainee representative on multiple local committees. She hopes to improve links between the RCP and its members in Wales.

Dr Norris Igbineweka

Specialist registrar haematology and clinical research PhD fellow in haematology, King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Dr Norris Igbineweka is a haematology registrar at King’s College Hospital, London. He is completing his PhD at Imperial College London in molecular haematology using gene editing experimental work to investigate certain undiagnosed red blood diseases in collaboration with Oxford University. Norris is also part of the UK arm of an international multicentre study, investigating genomic integrity and the safety of gene therapy in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). Norris’ research interests surround exploring novel gene environmental modulators that may contribute to the understanding of SCD phenotype through studying space and microgravity effects on SCD red blood cells. This initial work has led to acceptance of a first-author publication in the journal Nature Genomic Medicine. Norris has done previous research into fetal haemoglobin (HbF), a known biological marker of clinical severity in SCD. For his academic clinical fellowship, Norris initiated studies examining genetic regulators of HbF in patients with haematological malignancies. He found that some HbF gene variants may affect pathobiological processes and treatment responses in certain blood cancers. This study received a BSH early investigator grant, ASH abstract achievement award, abstract publication in the journal Blood, and a full manuscript in Annals of Haematology and Oncology. In 2016, Dr Norris was awarded and undertook a Fulbright scholarship for research at the NIH SCD branch, USA.

Dr Sarah Wheeldon is an ST7 haematology specialty training registrar in Exeter, having commenced her specialty training in the Peninsula Deanery in 2019. Sarah went to medical school at the University of Oxford, followed by foundation training in Thames Valley, core medical training in Peninsula and a trust grade post in ICU in Exeter. She has an undergraduate degree in physiological sciences and a postgraduate certificate in clinical education (PgCert). Dr Sohaib Nazir

Dr Sohaib Nazir is a Consultant Cardiologist and Clinical Senior Lecturer in cardio-oncology, multimodal imaging and heart failure at Royal Brompton Hospital and King’s College London. He is accredited at level III in CMR and Cardiac CT by both EACVI and SCCT/SCMR and has achieved board accreditation from the International Society for Cardio-Oncology, following a fellowship in cardio-oncology. He is accredited by the British Society of Echocardiography in transthoracic echocardiography. He is the Deputy Director of the Cardio-Oncology Centre of Excellence at the Royal Brompton Hospital, which is one of the UK’s two sites who were awarded Gold Accreditation by the International Cardio-Oncology Society. He is leading on a number of clinical studies related to multimodal imaging in cardio-oncology and coronary artery disease. More recently, as part of a team effort at King’s College London, his team was awarded with a £13million grant from the Medical Research Council to install one of the UK’s two Total Body PET scanners, which represents a new era for next generation imaging. He hopes to use this in the future to improve diagnosis and treatment for patients. He has a passion for teaching and holds a postgraduate certificate in healthcare education and is the current Chair of the BCS Education Committee. He is also the module co-lead for the Clinical applications of Medical Imaging, for MSc in Healthcare Technologies course at Kings College London.

Dr Anna Herrey

Consultant cardiologist, Bartshealth NHS Trust

Dr Anna Herrey is a clinical cardiologist at Barts Heart Centre with an interest in cardiac disease in pregnancy and cardiac imaging, and honorary senior lecturer at Queen Mary University London and the University of Cape Town. She set up and leads the maternal cardiology service at Newham General Hospital and previously the Royal Free Hospital, and jointly runs a preconception counselling clinic at Barts Heart Centre. Anna serves as education lead on the council of the UK Maternal Cardiac Society, ensuring adequate representation of maternal cardiology in the cardiology curriculum and delivery of high-quality teaching, and is an assessor for MBRRACE, the UK confidential enquiry into maternal deaths. Dr Jessica Manson is a consultant rheumatologist at University College London Hospital (UCLH) and an honorary associate professor at University College London (UCL). She is a general rheumatologist with a special interest in acute rheumatology and hyperinflammation. Jessica leads the multidisciplinary haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) service at UCLH, helping to manage patients with complex needs from around the UK. She also co-founded and co-chairs HiHASC, a group of doctors and scientists committed to improving outcome for patients with HLH and other forms of hyperinflammation. She did her PhD at UCL on lupus nephritis and now co-leads a hyperinflammation translational research programme.

Professor Abhishek

Professor of rheumatology, University of Nottingham

Abhishek is a professor of rheumatology at the University of Nottingham and honorary consultant rheumatologist at the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. He qualified in 1999 from Seth GS Medical College in Mumbai (India) and completed residency in internal medicine from NSCB Medical College in Jabalpur (India). After initial medical training posts in Rhyl, Cardiff and Liverpool, Abhishek joined the Rheumatology and General Medicine Specialist Registrar Training Programme in Nottingham (2005–2013). Here, he developed a clinical and research interest in crystal arthritis. He completed a PhD on calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD) in 2012. After completing his clinical and research training in January 2013, Abhishek took up a substantiative NHS consultant rheumatologist post in Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, where he worked till August 2014. He moved back to the University of Nottingham in September 2014 when the opportunity arose to take up a clinical academic appointment as clinical associate professor of rheumatology and pursue his research interests. He was promoted to full professor in August 2020. Apart from crystal arthritis, Abhishek’s other research interests include epidemiology of autoimmune rheumatic diseases, osteoarthritis, pragmatic clinical trials and clinical effectiveness studies using big-data, and evidence-based medicine. Abhishek was the co-PI of ‘American College of Rheumatology/European League Against Rheumatism CPPD classification criteria’ project, and co-chairs the OMERACT CPPD Working Group. He is also the founding co-convenor of British Society for Rheumatology Crystal Arthritis Special Interest Group.

Professor Hector Chinoy

Professor of rheumatology and neuromuscular disease and consultant rheumatologist, University of Manchester

Hector Chinoy is professor of rheumatology and neuromuscular disease at the University of Manchester, UK, where he leads an active programme of translational research within the Manchester Myositis Research Group. He is an honorary consultant rheumatologist at Salford Royal Hospital, and runs the Salford Neuromuscular Clinic, also offering an active trial programme for myositis patients. He is chair of the international MYONET registry, a consortium that collects standardised clinical data globally. As of July 2024, he has 247 publications and an h-index of 52.

Dr Rizwan Rajak

Consultant rheumatologist, Croydon Health Services NHS Trust

Dr Rizwan Rajak is a consultant rheumatologist at Shirley Oaks Hospital, offering private appointments for a range of musculoskeletal and rheumatic conditions. He graduated with honours at Cardiff Medical School in 2005 and subsequently undertook his specialist training in the University Hospital of Wales. This involved training in specialist clinics including osteoporosis, biological therapies, connective tissue disease/lupus, soft tissue rheumatism, and ankylosing spondylitis. Rizwan worked as a consultant at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Bath, where he undertook further specialisation in musculoskeletal ultrasound and metabolic bone disease. He is currently the clinical lead for osteoporosis and bone health, and rheumatology musculoskeletal ultrasound in the Croydon Health Service NHS Trust, where he has developed an integrated bone health service with colleagues from multiple medical and surgical specialties. Rizwan has developed a diagnostic service and also set up a regional network with other centres in standardising scanning practice and training. He provides US-guided musculoskeletal injections and has been training other doctors in the use of MSK US for several years. He is also co-lead on the development of an early inflammatory arthritis service, with the chief objective being to diagnose and treat inflammatory arthritis early, to preserve joint health and prevent long term damage, as per national best practice. Rizwan has an extensive background in teaching, having been the lead clinical tutor for rheumatology at the University Hospital of Wales, and an honorary clinical teacher at Cardiff University. For this, he received an award in teaching excellence. He is currently the programme lead for rheumatology at the University of South Wales and has overseen the educational and examination material of the diploma and master’s courses. Rizwan is a board member of the British Society of Rheumatology Education Committee, as well as the SCE editor for rheumatology for Study PRN, which is the principal question bank for trainees undertaking the exit exam for completion of their specialist training. To expand his skills base he undertook a masters in medical law at Cardiff Law School and writes medico-legal reports on a regular basis. He is the Medicines Management chair and Medicines Safety Group chair at Croydon Health Services, overseeing the governance of medicine use in the trust. Rizwan is also an appraiser of other doctors and works as a medical examiner for Croydon Health Services, reviewing cases of mortality and advising accordingly.

Dr Megan Rutter

Consultant rheumatology, Birmingham City Hospital, Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust

Dr Megan Rutter is a consultant rheumatologist at Birmingham City Hospital. She is particularly interested in complex, multi-system rheumatic diseases such as Behcet's disease and lupus. Megan was the RCP Trainee Committee co-chair from 2022–24, as well as the British Society of Rheumatology Trainee Committee chair. During her training, Megan completed a PhD looking at health outcomes in people with rare autoimmune rheumatic diseases, with a particular focus on outcomes during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. She sits on the Editorial Board for the journal Rheumatology.
