Optimising function following limb loss: the role of the rehabilitation medicine physician

Limb loss can have a profound impact on an individual’s mobility, independence and quality of life, with rehabilitation playing a vital role in helping patients achieve the best possible functional outcomes. Effective care requires a holistic approach that considers not only physical recovery and prosthetic needs, but also the wider medical, psychological and social factors that can influence rehabilitation.

Developed in collaboration with the British Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, this session will explore the role of the rehabilitation medicine physician in supporting people following limb loss. It will consider approaches to optimising function, coordinating multidisciplinary care and helping patients achieve their individual rehabilitation goals.

Clinical medicine through a global health lens

Global health is closely connected to everyday clinical medicine, with patterns of disease, health inequalities and wider social and geopolitical factors influencing the patients physicians see and the care they provide. From common challenges within hospitals to delivering healthcare in settings affected by conflict and crisis, considering medicine through a global health lens can offer valuable perspectives for clinical practice.

Developed in collaboration with the RCP Global, this session will explore the relationship between global health and the practice of clinical medicine. Speakers will consider what global health means for the patient in front of us, examine current guidance, research and knowledge gaps in hospital-acquired pneumonia, and reflect on the challenges of practising medicine in conflict and crisis.

Stroke medicine

Stroke remains a time-critical medical emergency in which rapid recognition, assessment and treatment can have a major impact on patient outcomes. Alongside advances in acute treatment, effective primary and secondary prevention and the management of different forms of stroke remain central to reducing the burden of cerebrovascular disease.

Developed in collaboration with JSC Stroke, this session will provide an update on key areas of stroke medicine relevant to physicians. Speakers will examine time-critical treatment in acute ischaemic stroke, approaches to primary and secondary prevention, and the assessment and management of intracerebral haemorrhage.
