Dr Ruth Law
After completing her pre-clinical studies at Cambridge University, Dr Ruth Law graduated from University College London Medical School. She trained in and around London achieving her CCT in geriatric medicine, stroke medicine and general internal medicine in 2014. Since then she has worked as an integrated geriatrician at Whittington Health in North London where she is clinical lead for care of older people and participates in the acute medical take. Within her department she has set up the nationally renowned Integrated Community Ageing Team (ICAT) which delivers comprehensive geriatric assessment to care home residents and housebound older people. She has presented widely on this topic and contributed to NHS England stake holder work around care homes. Her work resulted in her being awarded the British Geriatrics Society Rising Star Award for quality in 2018 Dr Law was selected to participate in the first cohort of the Emerging Women Leaders Programme at RCP and completed this in the summer of 2019. She is an elected member of the RCP Council. She also contributes widely to postgraduate education- she has been a Geriatrics SCE question writer since 2017 a PACES examiner and was a training programme director within her Trust. She is passionate about integrated multidisciplinary working and interdisciplinary learning to deliver person-centred care for frail older people.
Dr Rajkumar Parikh
Dr Parikh graduated from the University of Leicester in 2000. He undertook higher specialist training in geriatric and general (internal) medicine in the East Midlands before taking up a consultant post as a geriatrician at the Royal Oldham Hospital in March 2009. He completed a Master’s degree in medical education from the University of Dundee in June 2011 and is training programme director for geriatric medicine for HEENW (from August 2019). He is RSA for geriatrics in the North-West. He is the module leader for the psychiatry of old age module that is offered as part of Salford University’s MSc in geriatric medicine. He delivers population health webinars to final year students with colleagues from Manchester University. As a result of these academic commitments he is an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Salford and Manchester Medical School. He works as an orthogeriatrician at the Royal Oldham Hospital and runs the falls service.
Dr Eileen Burns
She was president from Oct 2016-Nov 2018, during which time the BGS published many influential publications including Best Practice Guidelines, and “Fit for Frailty”. She personally supported the development of NHS Rightcare “Frailty Toolkit”, and was (and is) frequently asked to speak at conferences, to parliamentary groups and other specialist societies. She is an advisor to the government on the Green paper on the Funding of Adult Social Care She recently completed a term of office as a member of the Council of the Royal College of Physicians of London Her interests are in the management of frailty, complex co-morbidity, health and social care integration, care home medicine and end of life care. She has written and spoken widely on these topics. She has been a member of several NICE/SCIE Guideline development groups in these areas She continues to work clinically in acute Geriatric Medicine and in the community. She has led the development of several care pathways to optimise the use of health and care resources in the community to allow patients to remain out with the acute hospital when clinically appropriate.
Dr Shuli Levy
Dr Shuli Levy graduated from the University College London Medical School in 2004 with an intercalated BSc in neuroscience. She undertook her graduate training in general internal medicine and geriatrics in north west London and became a consultant at the Hammersmith Hospital in 2016. She now runs the cardiogeriatrics liaison service which is a fully integrated multidisciplinary service caring for patients who have required a cardiology admission and have on-going medical requirements including frailty, rehabilitation goals and complex comorbid disease. She also provides liaison for haematology, renal medicine and cardiothoracic surgery at Hammersmith as well as practicing acute medicine at St Mary's Hospital. She is training lead for geriatrics trainees at Charing Cross and Hammersmith hospitals. She is chair of the British Geriatrics Society special interest group in ethics and law.
