Dr Andrew Goddard

After gaining an MD from Cambridge University, Dr Goddard trained in Nottingham and was appointed as a consultant physician and gastroenterologist in Derby in 2001. His main clinical and research interests are bowel cancer screening, H. pylori, iron deficiency anaemia and inflammatory bowel disease. He is chair of the British Society of Gastroenterology gastroduodenal section. He was director of the RCP's Medical Workforce Unit for 5 years until being appointed RCP registrar in 2014. In this role, he oversaw professional and clinical affairs, both in the UK and internationally. His main policy areas were workforce, healthcare funding, the future of general medicine, the medical registrar and ‘keeping medicine brilliant’. In 2018 he was elected the 121st RCP president, the youngest for 400 years and first from the East Midlands. His priorities as president are the three Ws: workforce, wellbeing and worldwide. He continues in clinical practice including being on call at weekends, as well as continuing in clinical research. Dr Goddard is married with two children.

Professor Ramesh Arasaradnam

Professor Ramesh Arasaradnam graduated from Queen’s, and then pursued specialty training in Sheffield and a PhD in Newcastle. Thereafter, he took up consultant position at Coventry with joint honorary academic appointments at Warwick, Leicester and Coventry universities. Currently, he is the academic vice president at the RCP. He was previously chair of the Research Committee for the British Society of Gastroenterology. In 2020, as part of the Queen’s birthday honours, he received an OBE for services to the NHS during the COVID-19 pandemic. His research interest is varied, but largely focused on diagnostic tools (he holds three patents) in cancer and inflammation to improve clinical pathways.

Dr Veena Raleigh

Dr Raleigh is a senior fellow at The King’s Fund, and an epidemiologist with extensive research experience and publications in public health, health inequalities, ethnic minority health issues, quality of care and patient experience. Her recent publications include a BMJ editorial on COVID-19 deaths, two overviews on COVID-19 mortality and ethnic minority health, and a report jointly with OECD – Is Cardiovascular Disease Slowing Improvements in Life Expectancy? Before joining The King’s Fund in 2009, Veena spent 8 years at the Healthcare Commission (CQC's predecessor) and was a reader at the Postgraduate Medical School, University of Surrey. Veena has also worked for international agencies on health and population issues in developing countries, and on international healthcare quality measurement projects with the Commonwealth Fund and the OECD. Veena was awarded a fellowship of the Faculty of Public Health in 2005, and a fellowship of the Royal Society of Medicine in 2007.

Dr Susannah Brockbank

Dr Susannah Brockbank is a specialist registrar in rheumatology and general internal medicine in the Mersey region. She is also the RCP trainee committee representative for this area, and is an enthusiastic advocate for postgraduate medical trainees. Susannah is also a lecturer at the School of Medicine at the University of Liverpool, where she is the lead for professionalism, ethics and legal context.

Mr Niall Downey

Dr Niall Downey qualified as a doctor from Trinity College, Dublin in 1993. He trained as a surgeon in Belfast and received his FRCSI in 1997 before returning to Dublin where he worked in the National Cardiac Surgery Unit. He subsequently retrained as an airline pilot with Aer Lingus in 1999 and combined aviation with medicine, working as an accident and emergency doctor for 6 years before focusing fully on aviation. After operating as a co-pilot on both the European Airbus A320 and Trans-Atlantic Airbus A330 fleets, he qualified as a captain in 2010. He is currently operating out of their Dublin base on the Airbus A320 European fleet and the A321neo Trans-Atlantic fleet. In 2011, he formed Frameworkhealth Ltd, providing aviation-style safety training modified specifically for healthcare, which draws on over 30 years’ experience between both industries. He has spoken at conferences nationally and internationally and has given a TEDx talk on applying an aviation safety strategy to healthcare.

Dr Clive Weston

Dr Clive Weston graduated from the Welsh National School of Medicine in 1981. His postgraduate education took him to Cardiff, London and Bristol, and his first consultant post was in Wakefield/University of Leeds. In 1997, he moved to Singleton Hospital, Swansea, providing general medical and cardiology service. Later, he helped design and implement the curriculum for the new Swansea University graduate-entry medicine course, becoming lead for professional practice. He retired at the end of 2018, returning to practise as an acute physician and cardiologist in hospitals in south-west Wales, within the Hywel Dda University Health Board, where he is lead for cardiology.

Dr Vicky Price

Dr Vicky Price is an acute medical consultant at the Liverpool Royal Hospital. She is also proud to be secretary for the Society for Acute Medicine (SAM), where she enjoys getting involved in mational policies and processes. She is same day emergency care (SDEC) lead for the Royal Liverpool and she is also AMU mortality lead, and keen to create an open and honest environment where we can learn from mistakes in a supportive environment.

Dr Emma Vaux

Emma was appointed consultant nephrologist and general physician at Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust in 2003. She is chief examiner Royal College Physicians London. Emma is also co-chair of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC) Joint Academy Training Forum. As Clinical Associate she leads the AoMRC Quality Improvement (QI): Training for Better Outcomes programme on embedding QI into postgraduate medical training. Emma completed her medical degree at the University of London in 1990, earning a degree in biochemistry during the course of her studies. She was awarded a doctorate from the University of Oxford in 2001 and completed a postgraduate certificate in teaching and learning in higher and professional education at the University of London in 2007. Emma has been a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians since 2007 and was a founding Q member. Going into GenerationQ, Emma was looking forward to the combination of academic study and personal development. 'Continuous learning is something that’s very important to me and I know I’ll enjoy the academic rigour that the programme demands’.

Professor Dame Jane Dacre

Professor Dame Jane Dacre is a past-president of the RCP. She is the third woman to have been elected to the role and was in office from 2014 to 2018. She is a consultant physician and rheumatologist at Whittington Health, and professor of medical education at University College London. Her main academic interest in medical education is in assessment, and she has led the development of several examination systems in medicine, for undergraduate and postgraduate doctors, including the MRCP(UK). More recently, she has championed equality and inclusivity in the medical profession. She led the government's gender pay gap review in medicine, and now chairs the implementation group for the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). Dame Jane chairs the DHSC Committee's Expert Panel, which is commissioned to evaluate the success of government pledges in health. At the RCP, she chairs the Senior Physicians Society, and is working to increase their engagement in the work of the RCP.

Dr Shahida Din

Dr Shahida Din is a consultant gastroenterologist and clinical academic in Edinburgh, leading a Scottish national programme of work to improve inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) colorectal cancer surveillance. She is a member of the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) IBD Committee and gastroenterology specialty advisor to the RCPE, working to reduce the variation in healthcare provision. In 2019, Shahida was jointly awarded a Helmsley Charitable Trust Grant to develop the Crohn’s Disease Gut Cell Atlas with her collaborators in Edinburgh and Cambridge.

Dr Paarul Prinja

Dr Prinja trained as an acute physician within the West Midlands before undertaking her training in obstetric medicine at St Thomas’s Hospital under the guidance of Professor Cathy Nelson-Piercy and Dr Anita Banerjee. She currently works at Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust as both and Acute and Obstetric Physician. She has also trained in intermediate critical care and is proficient in using ultrasound and has accreditation in echocardiography from the Faculty of Intensive care medicine.

Dr Wenhao Li

Dr Wenhao Li is the RCP trainee representative for North East London. He is an academic clinical fellow in hepatology and specialist registrar in the North East Thames Deanery, London. He is currently out of programme undertaking a PhD investigating innate immune signalling pathways in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis at Bart’s Liver Centre, Queen Mary University of London.

Dr Andrew Spence

Dr Spence is a specialist registrar in Gastroenterology and GIM and was elected to the RCP training committee in 2019 as Northern Ireland representative. His main interests are in medical education, quality improvement/research and developing leadership within training. Having completed a masters in medical education and a PhD, he is currently a sub dean clinical teaching fellow in Northern Ireland. With a background of simulation in medical training and development of medical curricula and assessment he is in the RCP training committee education work-stream, aiming to improve medical training for doctors of all grades.

Dr Antonio de Marvao

Dr Antonio de Marvao is an MRC Chain-Florey clinical lecturer in cardiology at Imperial College London and a fellow (ST9) in obstetric medicine at St Thomas’ Hospital. Antonio completed his training in cardiology with senior fellowships in cardiovascular MRI and inherited cardiovascular conditions at the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals. His research focuses on mathematical modelling of the heart, using cardiovascular MRI and artificial intelligence techniques, to understand the genetic and physiological mechanisms that underpin cardiovascular disease. In recent years, his academic and clinical interest has been in peripartum cardiomyopathy, pre-eclampsia and heart failure in pregnancy. He is a trainee representative to the board of the British Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance and sits in the British Junior Cardiologists Association Council. He is also a medical director for the Resuscitation Council (UK) advanced life support (ALS) course.

Professor Catherine Nelson-Piercy

Dr Melanie Nana

Melanie is a diabetes and endocrinology registrar in Wales deanery and represents Wales on the RCP Trainee Committee. She is currently out of programme undertaking the Obstetric Medicine fellowship at St Thomas' Hospital. After completing the fellowship, she looks forward to undertaking her PhD at King’s College London studying the genomics of hyperemesis gravidarum. Melanie is author of the chapter on 'Pituitary and Adrenal Disease in Pregnancy' in the textbook EndoText and 'COVID-19 in Pregnancy' in the Oxford Textbook of Medicine (in press). Melanie is currently involved in the development of the European Guidelines for Liver Disease in Pregnancy. She has a longstanding passion for medical problems in pregnancy and medical education, and hopes to one day forge a career as an obstetric physician.

Dr Lucy MacKillop

Dr Lucy Mackillop is a consultant obstetric physician at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust; honorary senior clinical lecturer at the Nuffield Department of Women’s and Reproductive Health, at the University of Oxford and president of the MacDonald Obstetric Medicine Society. She is also chief medical officer at Sensyne Health. Dr Mackillop trained in general, renal and obstetric medicine in Oxford, London and Sydney before taking up her consultant post in 2008. She has published over 80 peer-reviewed articles, national and international guidelines, book chapters and e-learning resources on a wide variety of medical conditions in pregnancy. She is chair and lead for the Thames Valley Maternal Medicine Network and co-wrote the Royal College of Physicians’ curriculum for a credential in obstetric medicine, launched in November 2020. She is an educational supervisor and external assessor for this programme.

Professor Lucy Chappell

Dr Richard Haynes

Professor Richard Haynes did his pre-clinical medical studies in Cambridge before moving to Oxford for his clinical studies and qualified in 2000. He came to the Clinical trial Service Unit for a period of out-of-programme research in 2006 to work on the HPS2-THRIVE trial with Professor Jane Armitage. He completed his training in renal medicine in 2011 and was appointed as an honorary consultant at the Oxford Kidney Unit. Shortly after, he was appointed to the MRC programme leader track and he is now programme leader in the MRC Population Health Research Unit for the programme in randomised trials in cardiovascular and metabolic disease.

Professor Áine Burns

Áine qualified in Ireland in 1983 and was awarded an MD in 1991 for bench research conducted at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith. She completed her renal training in London and has spent almost 30 years working as a clinical nephrologist and honorary senior lecturer at the University College London (UCL) Centre for Nephrology at the Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust London, being promoted to UCL professor of postgraduate medical education and nephrology in 2017. Her areas of special interest in addition to postgraduate medical education are chronic kidney disease in older people, conservative management of end-stage kidney disease, end-of-life issues in medicine and autoimmune conditions such as vasculitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, and until recently she looked after the renal needs of most of the Fabry disease patients in the UK. She has published extensively on these topics and led good practice, particularly in the area of conservative care.

Dr Jo Szram

Dr Szram is a consultant respiratory physician and the RCP’s Linacre fellow, a role focused on the development and leadership of the RCP’s network of college tutors and associate college tutors. She is responsible for linking their work to that of other regional roles, the RCP’s Trainees Committee and New Consultants Committee representatives, and advocates and champions college tutors’ work within the wider medical workforce.

Dr Charlie Finlow

Dr Charlie Finlow is a Welsh IMT3, based at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital. Charlie graduated from Norwich Medical School in 2016, and has a keen interest in education, border collies and jam-making!

Dr Tha Htet Nyi

Dr Tha Nyi is an IMT3 at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals. He graduated from the University of Medicine, Yangon, Myanmar in 2017 and achieved MRCP(UK) from the RCP London in 2021. He has a keen interest in medical education, and completed a postgraduate certificate at the University of Bedfordshire in 2021, and recently served as an associate college tutor at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King’s Lynn. His career aspiration lies in academic cardiology.

Dr Ajay Verma

Dr Sonia Panchal

Dr Sonia Panchal is a consultant rheumatologist at the South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust. Sonia completed her undergraduate medical training at the University of Liverpool and trained in general (internal) medicine and rheumatology in the East Midlands. She developed an interest in the quality and effective delivery of medical and educational leadership development. Sonia was a National Medical Director’s Clinical Fellow leading on national projects through the Academy of Royal Colleges and Health Education England. She was a Leadership Clinical Fellow at Health Education East Midlands. Her work included the design and development of the East Midlands Leadership and Management Programme for trainees, and she was responsible for leadership faculty development. Sonia completed a master’s in medical leadership and an advanced certificate in clinical education. She is a MRCP(UK) examiner. Sonia is a member of the BSR & BHPR guideline group on prescribing drugs in pregnancy and breastfeeding and has served as a member/chair on BSR committees.

Dr Justyna Witczak

Dr Justyna Witczak works as a consultant in diabetes, endocrinology and acute medicine at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. Her clinical and research interests include thyroid disease, obesity, diabetes mellitus type 2 and pituitary disease. During her specialty training, she received the Lewis Thomas Gibbon Jenkins Fellowship by RCP Wales to complete research on extracellular vesicles in human obesity, for which she was awarded an MD from Cardiff University. She is a committee member of the Young Diabetologist and Endocrinologist Forum Wales and was recently awarded the Society for Endocrinology Leadership and Development Clinician in Practice Award 2020. She is the South Wales representative of the RCP New Consultants Committee.

Dr Olwen Williams

Dr Williams is a consultant physician in genitourinary/HIV medicine at Glan Clwyd Hospital, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board in Wales. During Olwen’s tenure as Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board’s chief of staff, she obtained an in-depth understanding of the complexities and challenges of delivering whole-system change across planned, unplanned and community care within the context of targets and financial constraints. As clinical lead for one of the RCP Future Hospital development site projects, she supported the introduction of telemedicine virtual clinics. In her clinical work, Olwen has striven to ensure the vulnerable have access to high-quality healthcare, establishing services for sexual assault referrals, prison sexual health and virtual outpatients. She has worked closely with the Welsh government throughout her career and advised on development of the Welsh sexual health strategy, HIV delivery and issues regarding sexual assault and domestic violence. Physicians working with socially excluded people need a voice on Council, she believes, especially at times when some services are under local authority control.

Dr Imogen Felton

Dr Imogen Felton works as a consultant in respiratory medicine and adult cystic fibrosis (CF) at the Royal Brompton Hospital, London, with particular interest in CF-reproductive and maternal health, CF-related diabetes, CFTR-related disorders, including complications relating to CF-fungal infection. In 2019, she was awarded a PhD in respiratory and genomic medicine at Imperial College, investigating the fungal respiratory mycobiome in adult CF and non-CF bronchiectasis. She completed her postgraduate specialist training with the CF Trust Fellowship award, working in CF centres in the UK (Kings College Hospital, Royal Brompton Hospital, Manchester Adult CF Centre) and in the USA at Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) Therapeutics Development Network Centre in the Seattle Children's Research Institute and University of Washington. She has a particular interest in the impact on patient experiences and clinical outcomes following CFTR-mutation specific modulator therapy.

Professor Partha Kar

Professor Partha Kar is a consultant in diabetes and endocrinology, working in Portsmouth, and national specialty adviser for diabetes for NHS England. Since starting the role in April 2016, he has led and delivered on the glucose monitoring system Freestyle Libre being made available on the NHS across the country, the NHS Right Care Diabetes pathway, the diabetes Language Matters document, the type 1 diabetes NHS England web-resource – on NHS choices, the introduction of frailty into QoF treatment targets for diabetes care in NHS, availability of CGM to all type 1 diabetic pregnant patients, and setting up pilot projects for diabulimia treatment in London and Wessex. Other work has involved input in updating of driving guidelines in relation to use of technology in those living with diabetes, helping to develop a virtual reality programme to improve hospital safety and starting work on increased mental health access for diabetes patients across the NHS. He received an OBE in the 2021 new year’s honours list for services to diabetes care.

Dr Clive Lewis

Dr Lewis joined Royal Papworth Hospital from Great Ormond Street in 2006 and is a key opinion leader in advanced heart failure, cardiothoracic transplantation and mechanical circulatory support. He has a special interest in the health of young people, transition and adults with congenital heart disease. Dr Lewis is associate medical director and director of medical education. He is Cambridge University associate lecturer, senior clinical tutor with various roles within the Cambridge University Health Partnership. He continues to develop and deliver courses on professional development, medical education and clinical leadership nationally and internationally. Dr Lewis has held a number of positions, including on RCP Council, at the AMRoC and as a Training Committee member of the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board. He is National Association of Clinical Tutors secretary, clinical lead for the RCP Chief Registrar programme and president of the European Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation.

Dr Felicity Coad

Felicity is an ST7 in acute medicine with a special interest in obstetric medicine. She is a chief medical registrar at the Royal United Hospital, Bath. She is involved in projects to improve patient safety, streamline clinical processes and enhance staff wellbeing. Her projects include improving early identification of deteriorating patients; developing a hospital at night system and improving communication on the medical assessment unit with the use of job role and name stickers. As a chief registrar she provides pastoral support for trainees and represents the interests of trainees to the consultant body, hospital management and the wider multidisciplinary team.

Husam Jamil

Dr Jamil is currently an ST4 trainee in Acute medicine in Yorkshire and Humber deanery. I am also pursuing flexible portfolio training amd working on projects around medical education and research.

Dr Rachel Saville

Dr Rachel Saville graduated from Newcastle university in 2013, completing foundation training in the north east, before travelling to Wellington, New Zealand, for 2 years working in general medicine and hospice care. She completed my CMT training in the East Midlands, and is now a respiratory ST5 at Nottingham Hospital. At ST3, Dr Saville joined the RCP’s flexible portfolio training scheme, working 20% in medical education. As part of the scheme, her project has been to create virtual medical education resources for MRCP candidates – with the outcome being 'MEMcast'. MEMcast is a weekly podcast, with over 80 episodes recorded with specialty trainees and consultants across the region. It has grown in popularity, with an average 1,600 downloads per week. With topics covering the IMT curriculum, as well as a wellbeing series in collaboration with NHSE, NHSI and HEE, these 10–20 minute episodes are ideal for trainees revising. She is also undertaking a part-time master’s in medical education.

Mary Stevenage

ST5 in geriatric medicine currently training at St Georges Hospital in London and also undertaking an FPT placement at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford which is focussed on setting up and running a junior doctor pastoral support service.
